What Are the Different Types of CBD?

CBD, short for cannabidiol, is one of the cannabinoid compounds that can be extracted from cannabis. Other compounds include THC (or tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive compound that causes you to feel high), terpenes (which provide flavor and aroma), flavonoids, omega fatty acids, and others. CBD is often derived from hemp, a type of cannabis.

There are three main categories of CBD products—CBD isolate, broad-spectrum CBD, and full-spectrum CBD—and they contain different combinations of these compounds. It’s important to know the difference when choosing a CBD product so you pick the right one for you. Here’s a quick overview to help you make the decision:

CBD Isolate: CBD isolate is the purest form of CBD, as all of the other cannabinoid compounds have been removed. That means that you don’t have to worry about any sensitivities you may have to those other compounds, nor do you have to worry about getting high or failing a drug test from using it. It also means that CBD isolate products have little if any, natural flavor or odor. CBD isolate products, like those from CBD Sport Solutions, come in drops, capsules, gummies, salves, and more.

Broad Spectrum CBD: As their name suggests, broad-spectrum CBD products contain all of the natural cannabinoid compounds—except for THC. Because other compounds are present, there may be additional effects beyond those you’d get from CBD alone. In addition, broad-spectrum CBD has a stronger odor and taste than CBD isolate. Popular forms of broad-spectrum CBD include oils and capsules.

Full Spectrum CBD: Not surprisingly, full-spectrum CBD contains the full range of cannabinoid compounds found in the cannabis plant, including trace amounts of THC. These compounds work together to increase the effects, something often referred to as the “entourage effect.” Because a small amount of THC is present, taking full-spectrum CBD can cause you to fail a drug test. It usually comes in the form of an oil or tincture.

No matter which type of CBD you choose, you’ll find that this is one powerful compound when it comes to helping your body feel its best. For more information on the many healing benefits of CBD, check out our “What Is CBD?” article.
